Con diciembre de 2010 cierra un año muy particular no sólo para Vallarta, sino para todo México, ya que fue un lapso en el cual nos tocó ver cosas que no imaginamos que nos tocaría ver.

La barbarie se apoderó de nuestras pantallas televisoras, de la radio y la prensa para mostrarnos lo peor de nuestra sociedad, producto de la descomposición social por falta, primero de valores morales y, después, de oportunidades de movilidad social ascendente equitativa e incluyente. Lejos de ello, la desigualad social y la pobreza son cada vez es más marcadas en nuestro país, y la delincuencia encuentra en ellas tierra fértil para sus propósitos.

Sin embargo, esta situación de caos ha hecho reaccionar a miles de mexicanos que permanecían dormidos o indiferentes ante este panorama, ya sea porque fueron víctimas de la delincuencia en mayor o en menor grado, porque su patrimonio y el futuro de sus hijos está en riesgo, o simplemente porque desean vivir en paz, poco a poco se están sumando  a una mayor actividad civil, y ahora gozamos de una sociedad más participativa, más cuestionadora.

Efectivamente, hoy contamos con acciones que buscan concientizar acerca de la importancia en la educación de calidad como medio para salir de la pobreza y en ser cada vez más incluyentes con la juventud. No todo esta hecho, aún falta mucho por remontar en ese sentido; lo importante es que ya iniciamos y de todos depende que esto crezca y llegue a cada rincón de México.

Sin sabores aparte, de este año que termina me quiero quedar con lo mejor, guardar en mi memoria lo mejor, los acontecimientos y eventos en pro de la sociedad, que fueron muchos a nivel nacional y también en nuestro querido Vallarta.

En favor del cambio positivo tuvimos mil eventos que favorecieron a nuestra comunidad, muchos de ellos animados y promovidos por la comunidad extranjera residente en nuestra ciudad quien, con su colaboración, no sólo económica, sino su con participación hombro con hombro, llevando, la mayoría de las veces, la batuta en acciones en favor de los que menos tienen, se merecen un sentido agradecimiento. Me parece que para todos es patente cómo estos extranjeros que han decidido vivir aquí, ya sea de manera permanente o algunos meses del año, están realmente haciendo la diferencia para que Vallarta sea un lugar mejor para todos: los vemos trabajado en favor de becas de estudio, de niños abandonados; promoviendo y haciendo limpieza de playas, cuidando animales abandonados, recabando víveres para las víctimas de los desastres naturales, para aquéllos en rehabilitación, y prácticamente en todos lados. La lista, por fortuna, es interminable. En verdad, gracias por esa influencia positiva, y por el dinamismo cívico. Así también por su tiempo, dedicación y recursos invertidos en nuestra comunidad; gracias por considerar a Vallarta como su hogar y trabajar por tener un lugar mejor al lado de nuestros también esforzados vallartenses.

Y ahora, cerremos los ojos para pensar en todo lo que nos hizo sonreír en el año que termina y olvidémonos de lo demás…

Que esa sonrisa se multiplique y que el próximo año sea de armonía para todos.

As December 2010 arrives, it marks the end of a year that was very different to put it lightly, not just for Vallarta but for the entire country of Mexico.  During 2010 we saw some things we couldn ́t have ever imagined seeing.

Abject violence sprang to life on our televisión screens, on the radio and in newspaper headlines to show off the worst of our society, product of the social decomposition, lack of values and the total absence of social mobility or equality for young people without a moral compass.  Far from improving, the social inequalitites in our country seem to grow deeper each passing year, and in this abyss, organized crime finds a garden ripe for picking.

Nevertheless, this chaotic situation has caused a reaction among thousands of Mexicans who had been either clueless or just indifferent to the violence.  Something in them ignited a spark; perhaps they were directly affected by the violence, or because their economic future and that of their children is at stake, or maybe they just want to live in peace.  Whatever the reason, bit by bit they are joining the cause and we are now witnessing a civil society more participatory and questioning than ever before.

So now we find a series of actions that seek to create consciousness about the importance of quality education  as a means of lifting children out of poverty and giving them a place in society.  By no means should we claim victory just yet, there is still much to do in this sense.  But it is important to realize that the civil non-violent movement HAS started and the success or failure depends upon it sweeping across every corner of Mexico.

Leaving for a moment the bitter pills for another time, I would like to focus on the brighter side of this year, and keep in my memory the best of 2010, the events and moments that had a positive impact on our society.  There were plenty to speak of, both on a national level and also in our dear, dear Vallarta.

We had plenty of events that revolved around creating a positive change in our society, and many of these were sponsored by, funded and attended by members of the expat community that resides in our city and not only opens its ́ pocketbooks but also its hearts in championing charitable events in favor or those less fortunate.  Our deep and heartfelt thanks are in order.  I think it is worth noting how these foreigners who have made a conscious decision to call Vallarta home, be it for a few months every year or full time, and are determined to make it a better place for all of us.  The acts of goodwill are many and varied: they can be found starting scholarships for the poor, rescuing children off the street, cleaning our beaches, taking in abandoned pets, collecting foodstuffs for disaster victims, helping those in rehab and answering just about any call to help.  The list goes on and on.  We truly want to thank them for this positive influence and civil activism.  Thank you for your time, your dedication and the resources you commit to our community.  Thank you for considering Vallarta your home and working side by side with concerned fellow citizens of Vallarta.

And now we close our eyes and remember everything that brought a smile to our face in this past year…forgetting everything else…

Let that smile multiply and we hope that next year is filled with peace and harmony for all.
