Como es tradicional, en esta edición de vacaciones presentamos el Especial de Educación, una guía que siempre trata de ser exhaustiva acerca de la vasta oferta educativa que existe en nuestra ciudad, en el ánimo de apoyar a los padres de familia a hacer la selección más afín a las necesidades de sus hijos, tanto como a sus propias expectativas acerca de este largo proceso que vivirán, mano a mano, con sus retoños. Además del merecido descanso, durante estas vacaciones habrá que prepararse para tener un feliz retorno a clases pues, quienes inician una nueva etapa escolar tendrán mucho por hacer en la transición del preescolar a la primaria, de ésta a la secundaria o a la educación media superior. La educación de nuestros hijos es un asunto de la mayor importancia; requiere considerar no sólo los recursos financieros que habremos de erogar en el curso del ciclo escolar, sino elegir lo más apto para la familia, quien habrá qué tomar en cuenta aspectos importantes como son tiempos y distancias a recorrer diariamente para fomentar la puntualidad de los niños; los valores y tipo de disciplina que pondera el establecimiento escolar, su método pedagógico, actividades extracurriculares, etc. Muy importante será tomar en cuenta al niño o niña en la elección de la escuela como un elemental ejercicio de libertad, claro, apoyado en los consejos y cariño de los padres. Mucho dependerá de su personalidad: si tiene talentos, habilidades o necesidades especiales y la escuela prodiga atención personalizada o “educa a mansalva”; si requiere una mayor disciplina o practicar deporte, etcétera. Hay que poner nuestro mejor esfuerzo en la toma de decisión lo que, seguramente, influirá no sólo el logro educativo de nuestros hijos, sino en la forma en que éste asuma el ambiente con que se rodeará, los valores que adherirá, las amistades con las que compartirá durante esta importante etapa de su vida y lo constituirán como el adulto del mañana. Invertir en la educación de los hijos no sólo implica permitirles que, cuando crezcan, se independicen con el conocimiento y las habilidades necesarias para vivir con libertad espiritual y económica, sino que se trata nada menos del plan maestro de los padres para formar el tipo de ser humano que deseamos entregar a este mundo pues, de la educación que reciban en la escuela tanto como en casa, dependerá la calidad de ciudadanos que tenga este país y por ende el tipo de país tendremos. True to our tradition, in this vacation edition we present our Education Special, a guide that always aims at being thorough in relation to the extensive range of educational opportunities existing in our city. It is our intention to help parents arrive at the most adequate decision concerning the needs of their children as well as their own expectations about this life-long process they will undergo hand in hand with their offspring.

In addition to a well deserved rest during this school vacation, one should also prepare for a happy return to classes. Those beginning a new school stage will have a lot to do in the transition from preschool to elementary school, from elementary school to middle school and then on to high school.

Our children’s education is a matter of utmost importance. It requires not only taking into consideration the financial resources that we will have to spend during the school year, but also choosing the most suitable option for our family. We will have to look at important aspects such as time and distance of the daily commute – keeping in mind our aim to foster punctuality in our children – the values and type of discipline implemented by the educational institution, its pedagogical method, extracurricular activities, etc.

Upon selecting a school, it will be very important as well to take into account the opinion of our kids as a fundamental exercise in freedom – of course, as long as it is backed up by the parents’ advice and affection. A lot will depend on the kids’ personality: Do they have special talents, skills or needs? Does the school provide personalized attention or “mass education”? Does the child require greater discipline? Does he practice sports? And so forth.

We have to put our best effort into making this decision as it will certainly affect not only our children’s scholastic achievement, but it will also influence the way they will interact with the surrounding environment, the values they will adhere to and the friendships they will share during this important phase of their lives. In short, it will establish them as future adults.

Investing in the education of our children is not just about enabling them to become independent through acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve spiritual and economic freedom while they grow up. Moreover, it is the parents’ master plan to form the kind of human being they would like to give to this world. The quality of this country’s citizens, and hence the kind of country we will have, will depend
on the education that our kids receive both at school and at home.
