Si te quieres escapar un fin de semana de la playa y disfrutar de montañas, valles, ríos, y hermosos paisajes te recomendamos visitar los pueblitos pintorescos de los alrededores, que ofrecen muchos sitios de interés y diferentes actividades para realizar. Adicionalmente a esta riqueza ecoturística, tenemos la gran amabilidad de sus habitantes, la limpieza de sus calles y de su atmósfera, que parece haber detenido el tiempo para permitirnos un retiro de esta ajetreada viada actual. Cuentas con una red de caminos de terracería y otros rurales que intercomunican las localidades. La transportación terrestre se lleva a cabo por las carreteras Guadalajara-Puerto Vallarta por Chapalilla; Puerto Vallarta-San Sebastián; Guadalajara-Barra de Navidad-entronque San Clemente-Ayutla-Mascota-San Sebastián, también se puede llegar por vía aérea a pistas de aterrizaje regionales y disfrutar de la majestuosidad de las montañas, vistas increíbles que sólo se pueden apreciar desde las alturas.
Aunque aparentemente escondido e inaccesible al visitante, San Sebastián del Oeste es un lugar digno de visitarse, que reta tu espíritu de aventura para escalar montaña tras montaña, subir y allá arriba, en el corazón de la sierra, llegar a él.
Se compone de memorables caseríos habitados por su gente fiel, que ha ido envejeciendo a la par de sus minas y fincas, legado de tradiciones e historia. Según el II Conteo de Población y Vivienda de 2005, el municipio tiene 5, 626 habitantes y se dedican principalmente al sector primario. Es una población minera que tuvo su auge en tiempos de La Colonia, llegó a tener hasta 20, 000 habitantes; sin embargo su población disminuyó en el siglo XIX a causa del cierre de las minas.
En las afueras, se pueden visitar varias haciendas, unas destruidas como “La Máquina” y otras cuidadosamente restauradas como La Quinta, en la que se produce café orgánico, La Galera, La Hacienda San José, con su palmera solitaria o La Hacienda Jalisco. Ésta se encuentra en la entrada del pueblo, detrás de la pista de aterrizaje, cruzando unos campos azules de agaves tequileros. Antigua hacienda de beneficio de la mina La Quiteria, La Hacienda Jalisco es hoy un hotel-museo que conserva sus instalaciones de transformación del metal. El “Pabellón Mexicano”, la ex-tienda de raya de La Hacienda Jalisco, hoy transformada en hotel en la esquina sureste de la plaza; la iglesia, dedicada a San Sebastián, El mirador de la Bufa ofrece una impresionante vista sobre la Sierra Madre del Sur, hasta el Pacífico. Otro recorrido lleva a Los Reyes, pequeño, bonito y olvidado pueblo, muy parecido a lo que fue San Sebastián hace no mucho tiempo.
El municipio de Mascota, ubicado en las mesetas de la Sierra Madre Occidental, posee casi 40 comunidades, de las cuales la más importante es la cabecera municipal: Mascota. Ubicada a poco más de 1, 200 msnm, esta hermosa comunidad se encuentra a la falda del Cerro del Chivato y a orillas del Río Mascota, afluente del río Ameca. La temperatura anual promedio es de 22° C.
Los recursos naturales, bosques, lagunas y montañas que rodean Mascota son campos perfectos para días de campo familiar. En lugares como la Presa Corrinchis, Laguna de Juanacatlán y El Malpaís, lugareños y turistas llevan a cabo relajantes caminatas, paseos a lomo de caballo, en kayak o en lancha; rappel, escalada en roca y montañismo; además de disfrutar de lagos para la pesca menor y espacios seguros para entrañables días de campismo. A lo largo del camino, se descubren, en medio de paisajes hermosos, los ranchos tradicionales de adobe, con sus corredores rodeando el edificio. Nadie puede regresar siendo el mismo, después de visitar estos rincones de nuestro país.

If you are looking for a weekend away from the beach and surf, and feel like exploring the mountains, valleys, rivers and beautiful landscapes of Jalisco we recommend visiting the picturesque towns around Puerto Vallarta, which offer many different options for a quick trip. In addition to the amazing flora and fauna, the friendliness and warmth of the Sierra Madre`s inhabitants as well as the laid-back atmosphere make it feel like you have stepped back in time to a more tranquil era. There is a complete network of paved and unpaved highways and roads which connect the various communities. Ground transportation is available for the following towns: Chapalilla, Barra de Navidad, San Clemente, Ayutla, Mascota and San Sebastian. You can even reach these last two destinations by air due to the small airstrip located in San Sebastian which allows daily service from Vallarta. If you take this route, you will be amazed and the incredible aerial views of the Sierra Madre in all its` splendor.
Although when looking at a map, San Sebastian may seem to be hidden and inaccessible, it is actually a place you should definitely NOT miss. After traveling through mountain pass after mountain pass, you will feel a real sense of arrival when you reach this town, the heart of the mountain region.
Is a village made up of ancient haciendas and centuries-old homes that have aged gracefully along with the surrounding mines and fields, filled with a valuable legacy of tradition and history. According to the latest census figures in 2005, the municipality of San Sebastián has 5,626 inhabitants. It was a mining town a few centuries ago, and at its` peak had over 20,000 inhabitants, but with the closing of most of the mines in the area the population declined in the nineteenth century.
Just outside San Sebastián you can visit many old haciendas, some of which are now in ruins like La Máquina, while others are meticulously restored to their former grandeur like La Quinta, which proudly continues to produce organic coffee. Other haciendas that have been wonderfully restored are La Galera, La Hacienda San José (with its unique and out-of-place palm tree in the mountains) or La Hacienda Jalisco. The Hacienda Jalisco is located right on the main entrance to town, just behind the airstrip, across storybook fields of blue agave plants used to make our famous tequila. Its former function as hacienda to the Quitería mine is evident still when you visit its on-site museum of mining and metallurgy. The Pabellon Mexicano is an old company store but is now transformed into a boutique hotel on the southeast corner of the main square within view of the church, dedicated to Saint Sebastian. The scenic view from La Bufa is truly breathtaking…on a clear day you can see all the way to Vallarta and the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Yet another road can take you to Los Reyes, a tiny hamlet whose old-fashioned streets remind you of what San Sebastian was not so long ago.
The municipality of Mascota surprisingly incluyes over 40 distinct communities dotting the central plateau of the Sierra Madre Occidental. Among these the most important is the county seat, Mascota. Located at 1200 meters above sea level, this beautiful town is nestled at the foot of the Chivato mountain and alongside the Mascota River. The average annual temperature is a pleasant 22° C ( 72° F).
The natural beauty surrounding Mascota; its` forests, lakes and mountains are perfect spots for a family camping trip or picnic outdoors. Among the favorite stops are the Corrinchis damn, the Juanacatlán lake or Malpais lake. Both locals and tourists alike can take relaxing walks along the lakeshore, hikes amidst the trees, horseback rides, boat or kayak tours of the lakes, sport fishing, camping and even rock climbing or rappelling. Along the way, you will discover traditional adobe houses dotting the lovely landscape. You truly will not come back the same person after visiting this quaint corner of our country.
