Interview with Jose Martinez Guitron
Born February 20th 1939 in the warmth of a family from Jalisco, the recently Honoree, Eng. Jose Martinez Guitron, opened the doors of his office to share with us a little more about his personal life and the achievements that allowed him to enjoy and learn throughout his career as a visionary businessman on tourism. His affable attitude marked the guideline’s talk.
VIP: how was your foray into tourism development in Puerto Vallarta?
JMG: I am mechanical electrician engineer; I always liked electrical installations and I settled a company, leader in national electrical energy, which brought me to Vallarta to develop circuits for hotels. This allowed me to measure the pros and cons of the hotel situation in general. After these projects, I started with the construction of condos in Plaza las Glorias, Plaza Vallarta, until a severe crisis due to lack of regulation on the quality of the water, sickened tourists and was the catalyst to start with the first Association of entrepreneurs along with Mr Flavio Romero de Velazco, with whom we integrated a Committee, responsible for monitoring places where water was not potable.
VIP: Simultaneously with its foray into the sector, what were the projects of development towards attracting tourists?
JMG: Following the founding of the Collaborative Municipal Council, which I represented as first President, I wanted to develop one of the most ambitious projects in my career, as it was Marina Vallarta, standardize regulation in all the marinas of Mexico, which at the time did not exist. Subsequently, and at the hands of foreign investors, we developed the first golf course in Vallarta, then opened others in Ixtapa and Cancun, this sport had not been seen here as an opportunity of influx of tourists or as a center point for business, but has proved to be a great attraction for people from other countries that sought this pretext to visit the destination
VIP: Currently, how do you visualize the economic panorama in Vallarta?
JMG: One of the problems that stalled us, for a moment, was the index of insecurity, which is moving away now but it affected many other dealers, including myself, with a bad closing on sales. Now Vallarta feels very quiet, interesting projects are coming along, one in partnership with López Chávez right downtown, and another that focuses on accessibility with means of communication, and I’m talking about the new highway Jala-Puerto de Lima, which will change competition in the business and will allow the opening of others but, above all, it will reaffirm the weekend tourism. This keeps me very optimistic.
VIP: There’s a lot of talk about the return of the concept of luxury tourism that prevailed for a long time in Vallarta, which possibilities are there?
JMG: Primarily, we need investors who truly commit to Vallarta, whom lives it, their objective not only to get money but to harmonize with the environment. Such is the case of Marina Vallarta, that with the economic crisis, it was like a project without an owner; now that an entrepreneur bought it, it will be remodeled and could be made into a luxury concept, expanding the source of employment and investing more in infrastructure. I’ve gone to several international tourism trades and each time we discover thousands of new places, doing new things, because you have to keep in mind that, in tourism, your competitor is the world.
With the smile of someone that lives satisfied with the-things-well-done, he concluded the interview sharing to us that, besides all dynamism that deploys, he will continue in the real estate world. We thanked him, his outspokenness and leave satisfied with the encounter of this good speaker.
